How to Clean a Bike Cassette

Avid cyclists know how important it is to keep their machines clean. The rear cassette in particular needs to be clear of dirt and debris to ensure efficient shifting. Instructions

    • 1

Remove the rear wheel from the bike. Be careful to keep the chain off the ground--preferably place your bike n a repair stand or upside down.

    • 2

Spray off the cassette with a garden hose, making sure to remove any dirt buildup or significant grime. Remove as much dirt as you can, but don't worry about getting the cogs very clean at this point.

    • 3

Let the wheel dry for a few minutes, then spray on a coating of degreaser over the entire cassette. Allow the degreaser to stand for a few minutes.

    • 4

Wipe down the cogs with a rag. Get as much grime from the outside of the cassette as you can, and clean around the axle. If there is a significant amount of grime left in between the cogs, repeat Step 3 and apply more degreaser.

    • 5

Use a toothbrush to clean between the cogs. Spin the cassette as you hold the brush over and in between the cogs.

    • 6

If needed, repeat Steps 3 to 5 until there is no visible grime buildup on the cassette.

    • 7

Replace the wheel on the bike. If needed, apply a small amount of chain lubricant and shift through all gear combinations.

Tips & Warnings

  • Clean out your toothbrush a few times--it will bet caked with grime and will not clean easily.

  • If the cassette is extremely dirty, you may need to remove it from the wheel and soak it in a solution of degreaser.
