How to Fill Out a Citizenship Application

To fill out a citizenship application, you need at least two copies of the N-400 form and all your personal information. It is very important that all the information is supplied and that it is correct. Take your time when filling out the form or ask for help from someone that understands the form. A third party is allowed to fill out the form for you as long as they sign their name as the preparer.

      Print all the information clearly. Part 1 section A of the form asks for your first, middle and last name. Section B asks for the name printed on your permanent resident card. Section C asks for nay other names you have used. Section D asks if you would like to legally change your name. If you want to change your name, you must enter the new first, middle and last name.

      Answer the question in Part 2 regarding your eligibility to become a citizen. You say that you are 18 years of age or older and either A, B, C or D applies to your situation.

      Answer the questions in Part 3. These questions pertain to your personal information such as social security number, date of birth, date of permanent residency, country of birth, if your parents are citizens, marital status, if you are filing a disability form N-648 and what your disability is if you file a form N-648.

      Enter your address and telephone numbers in Part 4. They also ask for an email address if you have one.

      Enter your sex, height and weight as well as your race, hair color and eye color in Part 5.

      Enter the information in Part 6 that pertains to your last five years of residences with addresses. Also, enter where you have worked or went to school in the last five years.

      Answer the questions in Part 7 about where you have been outside of the U.S. in the last five years. Share how many 24-hour or more trips you had outside the U.S. and then list every 24-hour trip.

      Answer the questions about your marital history in Part 8. This section also requires information about your current spouse's immigration status.

      Enter all information about your children in Part 9.

      Answer all the yes and no questions in Part 10. This is three pages long. Then sign the document and provide the prepares signature if you had help.
