Tying a black belt is similar to tying any other colored martial-arts belt; the only difference is that many a black belt is embroidered with the name of the person who earned it. Since the name is usually only on one side, facing in one direction, it is important to tie the black belt in a very specific way.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Black belt

Step1
Unravel your black belt and fold it in half, with your name facing inward toward the other side of the belt. Place the middle fold on your belly button. The part of the belt with your name on it should be to your right and facing inward.
Step2
Wrap both sides of the belt around your body. The sides should cross in the middle of your back. Wrap one side underneath the other side. Bring the sides of the belt to the front. They should be of the same length. Your name should now be on your left side and facing inward.
Step3
Pull the left side of the belt underneath the double-wrapped part of the belt at your belly button and pull it out from the top. Pull up gently on it at the same time you pull down on the other side. Your name should now be on the top part of the belt and facing outward.
Step4
Bring both sides of the belt down in front of you and form an "X." The side of the belt with your name on it should be on top and your name should be facing down.
Step5
Put the side of the belt with your name on it through the loop and pull both sides tight. Both sides of the belt should be even, and your name should be right-side up and readable on the left side of your belt. Your black belt is now tied.
