How to Explore the Mount Baker Scenic Byway in Washington
Explore the Mount Baker Highway SR542 and access the only route to stunning Mount Baker. Begin the byway just west of Bellingham, Washington on SR542. This highway has been popular with people of all ages who are looking for beauty, solitude, fun, recreation and all of the other experiences Mount Baker has to offer. Plan to spend a day in the national forest, or camp for a weekend in one of the wonderful campgrounds. Enjoy skiing and hiking as well, depending on the season. This byway is 57.0 miles long and takes 2 to 3 hours to travel by car.

Start the byway in Bellingham. This beautiful city offers trips across the water and while you are in Bellingham, visit the Bellingham History Museum. Travel east on SR542, passing through the town of Deming, where there is a logging show held every June.

At Deming, turn north until Kendall, then continue east on the byway, passing through the towns of Maple Falls and Glacier.

Wander through the Nooksack River as it winds its way beside most of the byway. Enjoy the peaceful views of the Nooksack Falls. Large, shady trees are all along the byway, offering perfect rest and picnic areas.

Stop and see the eagles. These regal birds are drawn to the Whatcom area by spawning salmon each year. Up to 600 magnificent bald eagles come to Whatcom for a bite to eat heading south again. If it is a thrill to see a single eagle winging past, imagine viewing a tree full of the majestic birds. Mosquito Lake Road is one of the best places to see the bald eagles. Eagles are generally visible perching in the trees lining the banks and catching salmon in the river below.

Continue on SR542 through the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, before turning south into the Mount Baker Wilderness Area. Get your camera ready to snap some shots of breathtaking scenery.

Admire the views throughout the whole trip. Mount Baker Highway begins just west of Bellingham and winds up in spectacular Artist Point, the end of the byway.

Be extra careful and aware of snakes, since most of this trip is through mountain country.
