Instructions

    • 1

Measure the plastic sheet twice as large as you want your finished drawstring bag. Add 1 inch on each side. Cut the sheet to this size.

    • 2

Fold the sheet in half, making sure that if the plastic has an outside pattern, this pattern is on the inside. Make sure all edges are even.

    • 3

Thread a sewing needle with dental floss. Starting at the point of the folded-over plastic, position the needle 1 inch from the side of the edges, and sew in a straight line up one side of the cut edges. Repeat on the other side.

    • 4

Turn a 1-inch hem around the top of the bag, with the cut side facing the outside. Sew this in a straight line, leaving the area where the seams are open in order to thread the drawstring through.

    • 5

Attach a safety pin to one end of the string. Push it through the open seam. Use your fingers to thread the pin around the bag, bringing the safety pin back through the open seam hole where you began.

    • 6

Cut the string to the desired length for the drawstring, and tie the ends together.

    • 7

Pull the string through the other open seam in equal length. Flip the bag right side out. Pull the two strings and tie for a plastic drawstring bag.

Tips & Warnings

  • Depending on the size of bag needed, a kitchen food sealing device can be used to attach the sides and the hem, just make sure you don’t use a plastic that the device cannot melt together.

  • You can also sew the bag together using thin strips of plastic and a carpet needle.

  • You can use this method to make a drawstring bag out of almost any material, including leather.

  • Never let children play with plastic bags, as they pose a suffocation threat.
