Instructions

Perfumes in particular can dim a pearl's shine.

Always apply your makeup before putting on your pearls. Some types of makeup and perfume may be slightly acidic. They can damage the luster and shine of your pearls. Make sure that you are completely done with cosmetic preparations before putting on your pearls.

Avoid excessive humidity. Excessive humidity can make pearls go "soft" and cause them to become misshapen. Freshwater pearls in particular are sensitive to this problem. Always make sure that your pearls are completely dry before you store them, and if the humidity is a particular problem in your area you may want to consult a jeweler about additional protective measures.

Store the pearls flat. Store them in boxes, not plastic bags. Plastic bags can trap moisture which can cause serious damage to your jewelry. The best boxes to store pearls in are the ones that they originally came in. You may wish to wrap them in a piece of velvet to protect them from nicks and scratches.

Never hang a pearl necklace with other types of pendants or jewels.

Keep pearls separate from other jewelry. Other gemstones and settings can easily scratch or nick the surfaces of your pearls. Keep them entirely separate from other jewelery, not just in a different compartment.

Wash pearls in mild, soapy water. Pearls should be cleaned with mild soapy water. Make sure that no water gets in the drilled holes. You should wipe them down with a cloth, then rinse them in the same manner. You can allow them to dry on a soft, absorbent towel.

Tips & Warnings

  • Pearls should never be placed in an ultrasonic cleaner.
