From Quick Guide: Family Heirlooms
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A journal
  • A computer with Internet capabilities (optional)
  1. Step 1

Talk to your family about creating a journal. You will want to have communication with your family members to get them on board. The more people you have involved in this project to contribute honest entries to your family journal, the more rewarding the experience.

  2. Step 2

Decide whether you want to have one book passed around between all of you or several books that you can combine. You could even suggest individual family members typing their entries on a computer and printing them off to be compiled in one book or binder.

  3. Step 3

Purchase your journal(s). If you want, you can decorate it with family photos, family crests and other items. Perhaps you can work with your family to personalize the decoration of it.

  4. Step 4

Have your family being writing! Make sure every entry is dated and the writer is named. This way, there will be no confusion as to who said what or when the entry was given.

  5. Step 5

Consider writing prompts should your family experience writer's block. So often, journal writers will fall out of routine writing because they have "nothing to write about." If this is the case, suggest writing prompts like favorite memory, proudest moment, etc. to get your family writing. Most importantly, however, have your family write about their everyday lives. In the long run, they will not seem so mundane.

  6. Step 6

Encourage your family to write meaningful entries and often. Perhaps you could even write together to make your journal more of a communal effort.

  7. Step 7

Keep your journal in a safe place. These are memories your are preserving, so keep them accessible to everyone in the family but also keep them safe.

Tips & Warnings
  • The Internet is a great way to compile a family journal, even with members of your family who do not live close by. Consider creating a family blog that everyone has access to and submits entries to.
  • With so many hands involved in keeping track of the journal, be careful not to lose it.
