1
Sketch, paint or sculpt as much as possible. It is only through practice that you will improve your technique. Take a sketchbook and pencil with you everywhere you go. Sketch while you are waiting for a bus or before the movie starts. Sketch the people around you, the buildings and trees. No matter where you are, you can find interesting things to sketch.
-
2
Invest in good materials. Save your money and buy quality sketch pads, charcoal pencils, paint, canvas and brushes. Buy a portable easel that folds up and can be taken anywhere that inspiration strikes.
-
-
3
Take as many art classes as possible. In addition to classes at school, you can find classes at community colleges, at community education programs offered by local high schools and at art museums.
-
4
Work in different mediums to expand your skills. If you are a painter, trying sculpting will make you think about art in a different way and give you additional insight into the structure of objects that you paint.
-
5
If you enjoy drawing and painting people, take an anatomy class. An anatomy class is invaluable at helping you understand how muscles and bones work together and will help you draw people in motion more realistically.
-
6
Go the library and borrow art books. Look closely at the use of color and brush strokes in each painting. Try to duplicate the painting at home. The point of this exercise is not to copy a famous artist, but to learn more about the way brush strokes and colors define a painting.
-
7
Participate in art shows. If you take art classes, you may be given the opportunity to display your work in a show at the end of the class.
-
8
If you want to make money from your art, investigate careers in art, such as graphic design or fashion design. Most major cities have schools for those considering careers in these areas.

Tips & Warnings
Develop your own style. Art is best if it’s unique and personal.
Don’t let criticism change your art in a fundamental way. Everyone does not express themselves in the same way and everyone does not like the same kind of art. While one person may not like your art, someone else will.
