Draw a Fist

Many people complain about hands being difficult, but with this technique and the enough practice, an artist can eventually learn to draw realistic hands. A good hand gesture to practice is the fist because it is relatively simple to picture in one's mind and fists are relatively common gestures. So grab a pencil and get ready to draw.

Instructions

  1. Drawing a fist

    • 1

Draw two curving lines that form the base of the arm. On the opening where the wrist would be, draw a curving line that connects both lines that make up the arm. Make this curving line bend towards the arm. As you draw this curving line downwards, straighten it out slightly. When you reach to where you think the thumb is, move the line in an almost 45 degree angle. Then draw an oval with the bottom part of the oval touching near the bent part of the line you just drew.

    • 2

Go back to the curving line where the wrist is at. Where this line ends, draw a curving line upwards with the curve going downwards. When you reach the point where you want to knuckle to be, draw another curving line with the curve going away from the hand and continue until you reach the circle that is supposed to represent the thumb.

    • 3

Find the top left part of the oval where the thumb is supposed to be. Draw a curving line that goes upwards and towards the wrist with the curve going away from the wrist. Then draw a large curve that starts where the last curve ended and goes all the way across the hand with the curve going upwards.

    • 4

Start drawing the lines for the fingers. Fingers have three digits, so draw three lines with each line slanting slightly more downward. Start drawing a line underneath the top curving line on the hand. Draw this line with bumps above where the fingers will be to represent the knuckles. Draw lines connecting the bends in the lines that represent the fingers.

    • 5

Erase the guidelines and start redrawing the fingers and the rest of the hand to make it appear realistic, making adjustments as you see fit.

Tips & Warnings

  • Look at a reference of a real fist if you are having a difficult time imagining what a fist looks like.
