The fuse is one of the most important parts of any style of fireworks. Without the fuse, nothing would happen. Fortunately, the fuse is also one of the easiest components to make for fireworks, especially if you need a simple fuse to use for smoke bombs. Whether you are making your own smoke bombs at home, or need a replacement for a faulty fuse in a smoke bomb that you purchased, you can have your own homemade smoke bomb fuse ready to go in no time.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 small bowls
  • String
  • Water
  • Black powder
  • Paper towel
  1. Step 1

Wet your string. Take a piece of string that is long enough for your smoke bomb, and place it in a small bowl. Add enough water to the bowl to completely submerge the string. Allow the string to soak in the water for a few minutes so that it becomes completely saturated.

  2. Step 2

Prepare the black powder. Take another small bowl and pour a generous amount of black powder into the bottom of the bowl. You can usually purchase black powder at any store that sells guns and hunting equipment. Since you only require a small amount, you should be able to purchase it without any special licenses or permits. Farm supply stores sometimes carry black powder as well, since farmers may use it to blast tree stumps out of the ground.

  3. Step 3

Coat the string. Lift the string out of the water. Hold it above the bowl for a moment so that any excess water from your hands and the outside of the string can drip off. When the dripping has stopped or slowed to a crawl, put the damp string into the bowl of black powder. Use your dry hand to scoop black powder onto the top of the string so that it is completely buried.

  4. Step 4

Dry the string. Once it has been completely coated, lift the string out of the black powder. Stretch it out, and place it on a paper towel. Leave the string along for a minimum of 5 to 6 hours so that the moisture can dry completely. An overnight drying would be preferred, if you have the time available. Once the string has dried, the black powder will remain coated to the outside, giving you a very effective fuse.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you can not find a string the right size, take several pieces of thread and tie them to a beater on your electric mixer. Hold the loose ends with one hand, and slowly power the mixer with the other. The individual threads will be twisted together to form a nice piece of string that is just the right size to be your fuse.
