Baby monitors are devices that make a new parent's job easier. They allow you to go outside, close the door, and still hear your baby if she wakes up from a nap. In fact, some baby monitors even allow you to see your baby. With so many baby monitors on the market, choosing one can get confusing. This article is designed to take the confusion out of shopping for baby monitors.

  1. Step 1

    Check your cordless home telephone and see how many GHz it is. Since 2.4 GHz is fairly common, you will want to stay away from this frequency band. Otherwise you will be left with staticky baby monitors.

  2. Step 2

    Consider buying digital baby monitors instead of analog monitors if you live in a neighborhood with lots of children. Anyone with similar baby monitors that lives in your same vicinity will be able to hear what goes on in your home on an analog system. Digital systems don't allow that to happen.

    Determine if you have any special need for a video baby monitors. People who might want to consider a video monitor are those with children who share a room, have home security issues, and those with newborns who know how to roll over.

    Purchase SIDS baby monitors if your child is at an elevated risk for SIDS. Your child's doctor will let you know if your child is at an elevated risk. These baby monitors can detect when your baby stops moving completely for a specific amount of time. Then an alarm sounds. There is no need for one of these monitors for a typical newborn baby.
