Step 1
Check your cordless home telephone and see how many GHz it is. Since 2.4 GHz is fairly common, you will want to stay away from this frequency band. Otherwise you will be left with staticky baby monitors.
-
Step 2
Consider buying digital baby monitors instead of analog monitors if you live in a neighborhood with lots of children. Anyone with similar baby monitors that lives in your same vicinity will be able to hear what goes on in your home on an analog system. Digital systems don't allow that to happen.

Step 3
Decide if you want to spend the extra money to purchase a monitor with lights and sound. Baby monitors with lights and sound allow you to see when your baby makes noise. The louder the noise, the more light. In fact, you can turn down the sound rely solely on the lights if you need things quiet. These do, however, come with a slightly larger price tag.

Step 4
Determine if you have any special need for a video baby monitors. People who might want to consider a video monitor are those with children who share a room, have home security issues, and those with newborns who know how to roll over.

Step 5
Purchase SIDS baby monitors if your child is at an elevated risk for SIDS. Your child's doctor will let you know if your child is at an elevated risk. These baby monitors can detect when your baby stops moving completely for a specific amount of time. Then an alarm sounds. There is no need for one of these monitors for a typical newborn baby.
