How to Reduce Postpartum Edema

Post pregnancy swelling

Postpartum edema is a common condition that can occur after delivery. Often a result of lots of IV fluids given over the course of delivery and excess fluid held in over the course of pregnancy, the edema or swelling of the body can be shocking to see. Ankles and hands are common areas of swelling and in most cases, edema resolves on its own within a few weeks after delivery. But if you're looking to speed up the process, you can take a few steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Avoid salt. Salt can cause you to hold water.

    • 2

Elevate your feet. Elevating your feet 6 inches above your heart can help decrease swelling in the legs or ankles.

    • 3

Purchase a pair of compression stockings. Ask your doctor if you could benefit from compression stockings. Compression stockings can help to reduce swelling in the legs and promote circulation.

    • 4

Wear supportive shoes. It may seem to make sense to wear sandals or loose-fitting shoes, but snug-fitting sneakers can help reduce leg swelling. As you stand on your feet, snug-fitting shoes can provide support and discourage fluid from moving down into your feet.

    • 5

Drink lots of fluids. Water can help flush out your body and promote frequent urination.

Tips & Warnings

  • Your body works to eliminate fluid after delivery through sweating and frequent urination.

  • If you have headaches or pain, contact your physician. In some cases, edema is a sign of issues with blood pressure or a blood clot. Contact your doctor if your hands or face become or seem puffy or swollen.

absolutely incorrect advice... To resolve postpartum edema it is essential that you not drink more water, and make sure that it has electrolites in it. Also salt is very important and should be used to taste through out pregnancy and postpartum. Having low sodium and increased water can cause you to swell more. My advice is to put a a quarter size pile of sea salt in your hand every morning and lick until it is gone or you can't swallow anymore, you will immediately need to pee and should see marked reduced edema.
