How to Prevent SIDS
SIDS, or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, is the unexpected and often unexplained death of a child under one year of age. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends parents follow the following steps to reduce the risk of SIDS.
Instructions
-
-
1
Put babies on their backs to sleep.
-
2
Avoid loose bedding and do not put loose items in the baby's crib. Babies should sleep on flat, firm surfaces and should not sleep on adult mattresses, water beds or soft fluffy bedding. Separate bedside sleepers that attach to your bed are great for babies.
-
-
3
Do not overdress your baby. Overheating is thought to contribute to SIDS. Dress your baby comfortably and keep the area where your baby sleeps slightly cool.
-
4
Keep your baby in a smoke-free environment and avoid smoking while pregnant.
-
5
Consider using a pacifier. Pacifiers have been shown to help reduce the risk of SIDS.
-
6
Breastfeed your baby. Breast milk can contribute to the overall health of your baby.
