New York City is one of the greatest music cities in the entire world, especially when it comes to checking out live music. From internationally famous bands sweeping through town to the extraordinary array of local bands and artists, there is never of shortage of music to fill your ears in New York. Here are some great live music venues to check out when you are in New York City.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check out the Bowery Ballroom on Delancey Street. One of downtown's best known rock clubs, the Bowery Ballroom has for years hosted acts ranging from the internationally famous to smaller foreign bands coming through town on tours. Everyone from The Strokes to rocker Courtney Love has performed on the stages of this club.

  2. Step 2

Go to Pianos on Ludlow Street in the Lower East Side! This tiny Lower East Side club/restaurant has been for years the hot spot for emerging bands and artists to perform. With its amazing, bustling location, tiny stage, and authentic New York City charm, Pianos is the perfect way to be exposed to the best live music the neighborhood has to offer. There is also a stage in the upstairs lounge to enjoy bands and artists with a more acoustic-oriented sound.

  3. Step 3

Rock out at Mercury Lounge on Houston Street. Mercury Lounge, like the aforementioned Pianos, is another Lower East Side live music favorite. Indie favorites such as Low and Editors have all performed at this club, as well as countless national and international touring acts. Enjoy the great sound and stylish ambiance of this New York City gem.

  4. Step 4

Stop by Lit Lounge on 2nd Avenue. This East Village dive bar is a great place to go for the dark, grimy and exciting side of rock 'n roll. Since legendary nightclub CBGB has departed, Lit Lounge is a good place to enjoy the trashy side of New York City rock. With its low ceilings and dark basement setting, bands such as The Bravery have broken out onto the scene playing this beloved club.

  5. Step 5

Experience Southpaw on 5th Avenue in Brooklyn. This Park Slope nightclub is known as Brooklyn's premier live music club, and everyone from local favorites (Brooklyn band Asobi Seksu, for example) and national and international acts have performed here. With a relaxed atmosphere, hip crowd and great sound system,

Tips & Warnings
  • Go to Williamsburg in Brooklyn. This neighborhood hosts countless bars and clubs.
  • Bring earplugs with you. Live music venues can be extremely loud, and you should protect your sensitive ears.
