Instructions

    • 1

Cut a length of wrapping paper 1 yard long and lay it with the back grid up.

    • 2

Mark the 15-inch middle of one short side.

    • 3

Cut a paper plate in half. Fold one-half of the paper plate again to find the center arch. Match the center point of the paper plate arch with the mark at the short end of the wrapping paper. Draw the arch on the wrapping paper.

    • 4

Draw the arch of the paper plate in the two corners on the other end of the wrapping paper.

    • 5

Line up the yardstick with the outer edges of the arches and draw a line connecting all three. You will have a triangle with rounded corners.

    • 6

Cut the pattern into three pieces. Measure down from the top center of the triangle 11 inches, measure the middle section 16 inches and the bottom section 9 inches.

    • 7

Cut four pieces of felt for each pattern piece. The top piece is white felt, middle piece is orange felt and the bottom piece is yellow felt. Add 1/2" to the felt where the pattern was separated.

    • 8

Pin the bottom edge of one white piece to the top edge of an orange piece with the right sides facing. Sew a 1/2" seam. Pin the bottom edge of the orange piece to the top edge of the yellow piece with the right sides facing. Sew a 1/2" seam.

    • 9

      Iron the seams open.

    • 10

Trim the edges of the candy corn at the seams.

    • 11

Repeat steps 8, 9 and 10 three more times.

    • 12

Cut the quilt batting into two 1-yard pieces.

    • 13

Lay one piece of batting on a flat surface. Position one candy corn piece on the batting with the right side up.

    • 14

Cut one 18-inch length of ribbon and pin one end 6 inches above the orange and white seam on one edge of the candy corn. Cut another 18-inch length of ribbon and pin one 6 inches above the orange and white seam on the opposite edge of the candy corn. Cut a 9-inch piece of ribbon and pin halfway down the orange section on the edge of the candy corn. Cut a 9-inch piece of the ribbon and pin halfway down the orange section on the other edge of the candy corn.

    • 15

Match another candy corn piece on top of the first with the wrong side up. Pin the three layers together, making sure the tails of the ribbon are inside the sandwich.

    • 16

Sew around the candy corn leaving an opening along the bottom yellow edge. Trim the excess batting away. Turn the candy corn right side out. Sew the opening closed.

    • 17

Repeat steps 13, 14, 15 and 16 for the other side of the costume.

    • 18

Tie the front ribbons to the back ribbons at the top of the candy corn, creating a sandwich board effect. Put the costume on. The top of the candy corn should fall just below the chin. Tie the side ribbons together and your candy corn is ready to go.

The roundness of the paper plates are intended to give you the curved shape of the candy corn corners. Once you have your curves, the lines you will be drawing serve only to connect the curves together. Lay the yardstick on the outer edge of one corner curve and the outer edge of another outer curve. Draw your line. Repeat on the other two sides.

I am stuck on step 5 - I can't see where I am lining up yardstick with outer edges of the arches. I traced in arches in both directions and neither makes sense as to how to connect all three. Help! I am trying to get this done by tomorrow evening.
