How to Play the Spanish 8 Tone Scale on the Guitar
The Spanish eight tone scale is very unusual. It is comprised of eight tones instead of the usual seven or five tone scales that we are traditionally accustomed to in western music. The scale uses a succession of semitones that give it a very distinct sound. Try using this scale in your next solo or when composing to create some truly unique material.

Begin the scale by placing your forefinger on the third fret of the sixth string (low E string.) This is the root note of the scale.

Play the fourth fret of the sixth string with your middle finger. This is the note A flat., the second degree of the Spanish eight tone scale.

Play the sixth fret of the sixth string with your ring finger. This is the note B flat, the third degree of the Spanish eight tone scale.

Using your pinky, play the seventh fret of the sixth string. This is the note B, the fourth degree of the Spanish eight tone scale.

Using your forefinger, play the third fret of the fifth string (A string.) This is the note C, the fifth degree of the Spanish 8 tone scale.

Play the fourth fret of the fifth string with your middle finger. This is the note D flat--the sixth degree of the Spanish eight tone scale.

Play the sixth fret of the fifth string with your pinky. This is the note E flat, the seventh degree of the Spanish eight tone scale.

Using your forefinger, play the third fret of the fourth string (D string.) This is the note F, the eighth degree of the Spanish eight tone scale.

Play the fifth fret of the fourth string with your ring finger. This is the final note of the scale. It is one octave higher than the root note you played in Step 1.

Play the scale in reverse. Play steps 9 through 1 in reverse order to complete the scale.
