Step 1
Press the "Class" button in the character-creation screen and select your base class. It must be "mage."
-
Step 2
Press the "Identity" button. Choose your name. Your first name must be unique, and will be checked when you finish your character.
-
Step 3
Choose your race. The most powerful wizards are elves, vampires and nephilim. However, there are advantages and disadvantages to each race. The elf has the most potentially destructive magical power, since it can take the Archmage discipline rune later in the game. However, its uppermost native constitution level is 70, and must be bolstered with jewelry and increased constitution runes. The vampire, on the other hand, must draw on health for all its skills and powers, whereas other races draw on stamina and mana for theirs. However, the vampire bloodcraft power, which allows you to drain health from both non-player and player characters, is well worth developing and will give you an advantage in the game. Healing powers are also available to the vampire later on.The nephilim have natural flight, which is a benefit if you would like to bomb your opponent from the skies. It should be noted, though, that the nephilim's flight uses an enormous amount of stamina, so you will not be able to effectively use this skill until your character is very well-developed.
-
Step 4
Select trait runes for your character. The best ones for wizards are intelligence runes, which increase their powers, and spirit runes, which increase the amount of mana they have to draw on during the game. The only exception is the vampire, whose constitution must be increased at all costs. It's a good idea to take some constitution runes for the elf as well, although better runes can often be purchased from other players in Sea Dog's Rest or looted from creatures during play.
-
Step 5
Develop your character. As you level your vampire wizard, you should put as many ability points into Constitution as possible, and place the remaining points into Intelligence. The ability points appear in the Character Stats screen, which can be opened by clicking the uppermost button in the bottom left panel of your screen. All other wizards should place their ability points into Spirit and Intelligence first, then place the remainder in Constitution.
-
Step 6
Obtain jewelry, weapons and clothing to offset any deficits in your wizard's resistances. Resistances are a character's ability to withstand certain kinds of attacks from both monsters and player characters. The Vampire has a native 10 percent resistance to poison, 5 percent to magic, -25 percent to fire and -25 percent to holy attacks. The elf has a -5 percent resistance poison and 5 percent resistance to magic, and the nephilim have a 10 percent resistance to lightning, -10 percent to magic, 15 percent to fire and -15 percent to holy. You should get equipment to balance out the negative resistances as early as possible.
-
Step 7
Develop the right skills and powers. Increase your skill at conjuring a familiar and train up the Incantation of Rejuvenation skill which will allow you to heal your pet. Sign of Sorthoth and Blood Boil are also excellent skills to develop, since they inflict damage over time, even when you're not actively attacking the target. Train up wizardry skill as much as possible to get higher-level powers, such as Cloak of Invisibility. Skills and powers can be trained over 100.
-
Step 8
Purchase discipline runes from other players at Sea Dog's Rest. Traveler, which allows for personal teleportation around the game, is an excellent discipline rune for a wizard. Vampire wizards can take Gorgoi or Belgosh discipline runes, which allow you to train bloodcraft skills. Check the skills associated with each discipline rune on the Shadowbane website to see if it's a rune you'd like to take.
