Much like humans, dogs are prone to allergies, colds and infections. As an untrained professional, it may be difficult to determine if your dog's eye cold is a common allergy or something more serious. In order to ensure your pet's safety and sense of sight, it's important to have your dog treated by a veterinarian at the first sight of thick yellow or green discharge from the eyes.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Clean washcloths
  1. Step 1

Keep your dog's eyes clean. Rinse a clean washcloth under warm water. Gently wipe your dog's eyes to remove eye discharge and tear stains. Continue to wipe your dog's eyes with a clean washcloth at the first sight of eye discharge or crust.

  2. Step 2

Choose a reputable veterinarian or pet clinic in your area. Call the animal clinic to make an appointment. Describe your dog's symptoms to the veterinarian's assistant.

  3. Step 3

Follow the advice and treatments as prescribed by the veterinarian. Your vet may prescribe eye drops or an oral antibiotic. Make sure that your dog gets every dose of his treatment.

  4. Step 4

Contact your veterinarian if your dog's eye cold does not improve over the course of a few days. She may need to readjust the dosage of medication.

Tips & Warnings
  • Eye infections can become very serious. If a serious eye infection is left untreated, your dog could lose his eye.
  • Do not attempt to medicate your pet without consultation from a professional.
