One of the nicest ways to show your appreciation following a job interview is to send a “thank-you" note within 24 to 48 hours after the meeting. Sent to the appropriate individual(s), a professionally typed thank-you note will reconfirm your interest in the position and reestablish your credentials in the mind of the employer. The best rule of thumb when writing an interview thank-you note is to make it short and sweet.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

When applying for a position within a large business or corporation, it is not unusual to speak with many different people during the interview process. However, only address your thank-you letter to the most important person or persons with whom you have interviewed.

  2. Step 2

In one to two concise sentences, thank your interviewer for 1) taking the time to speak with you on a specific date, and 2) for the opportunity to learn about the company or place of business.

  3. Step 3

For the second paragraph, or body, of your letter, begin by expressing again your interest in the position. Next, write a sentence or two noting one or more important key points of the interview. The ultimate goal here is to remind the interviewer of your qualifications.

  4. Step 4

Close your thank-you letter by reiterating your appreciation for the interview and by offering to provide further information as to your qualifications if necessary.

Tips & Warnings
  • A handwritten "thank-you" note is only appropriate if the hiring company consists of fewer than five employees, including the person with whom you interviewed.
