How to Bring Out Hazel Eyes

Found This Helpful

While at first glance hazel eyes might appear to be a warm-brown color, these irises are rich in variation and less than 10 percent of the population can claim them. Some skew toward a cat-eye green near the center, while others have a warm amber undertone. These subtle variations of color open up a world of rich eyeshadow shades and combinations.

Golden Day

Flecks of gold are common in hazel eyes, which means they often look golden amber. Bring out that beautiful color with a wash of champagne shadow with a yellow undertone up to the crease. Dip an angle brush into the same color and sweep along the bottom lash line as close to the lashes as possible for a brightening effect.

Line your top lash line with a deep brown eye pencil to emphasize the golden colors in your eyes and keep it lighter for daytime. Apply with tiny dash strokes as close to the lash line as possible. Finish off with a black mascara on the top lashes. Keep the look daytime fresh with a light berry lip balm and a soft rose blush on the apples of the cheeks. The warm tones in this makeup look pair beautifully with nearly every hair color, especially blond and brown tresses.

  • Bring out your hazel even more by wearing complementary clothing colors. Opt for a Kelly green dress, blouse or blazer to bring out your natural green and golden undertones. Alternatively, deep charcoal gray and lavender also bring out the gray and brown shades in your irises.

Coming Up Roses

Pink and rich mauve colors bring out the green elements of hazel eyes and create a playful, light combination for early evening. Sweep a medium matte mauve with copper undertones across your eyelid. Highlight the inner corner of your eye with a gold or bone highlight color to open up the eye.

Go bold and bring out the dynamic color of your eyes with a jet-black liquid or gel eyeliner. Apply the liner as close to your lash line as possible. Follow with two coats of black mascara to the top and bottom lashes for a stunning contrast to your dynamic, green-amber irises. Keep your lips soft with a pink tinted lip balm. This warm look subtly mirrors and pairs well with brown and red tresses.

Purple Night

Purple is the color of royalty and it's also the ultimate smoky hazel eye color. Sweep a rich eggplant purple up to your crease. Work a little bit of the shadow into the curve of your crease for added depth. Opt for a matte formula to create the most stunning contrast with your eyes. Dip an angle brush into the same purple color and sweep along the bottom lash line as close to the lashes as possible. You can also swap out the purple with a mossy green for a total smoky salute to the green undertones in your eyes.

Line your waterlines with a jet black cream eyeliner pencil, and follow with a black liquid or gel eyeliner along your top lash line. Flick the eyeliner up at the outer corner of the eye for added lash-line drama. Complete the look with black mascara on the top and bottom lashes.

Keep the look balanced with a sandy-toned neutral lipstick with some gold flecks and a rosy cream blush for extra glow power. The rich colors of this smoky eye balance with every hair color, from platinum blond to jet black.
