How to Make Homemade Wedding Cakes

Wedding cakes are so elegant and beautiful that it may seem impossible to replicate one at home in your spare time. While to make wedding cakes can be time consuming, it's possible with a little practice. You could make one for a friend or family member, or even possibly use it for a business opportunity.

  • Cake decorating supplies
  • Scrapbook to keep pictures of work you have done
  1. Step 1

    Take decorating classes. When you are new to the cake decorating world, your mind might be running with ideas, but you may have no idea where to start. Basic lessons held at your local craft store will teach you the basics so that you can expand with your creativity from there. Check with your local store to find out about fees and class schedules.

  2. Step 2

    Practice on small and simple cakes. It is not possible to be able to create beautiful three-tiered masterpieces overnight unless you have significant talent. Make numerous small cakes, and let your imagination go wild for practice. It is a lot of fun to show off your practice work. It can be a lot of fun eating them as well.

  3. Step 3

    Purchase supplies and magazines. You are going to need a lot of supplies when you start. Shop around and look for sales. Cake decorating supplies can be quite costly when you add them up. Magazines will help you with your creative side, giving you endless opportunities.

  4. Step 4

    Assemble an idea book with your creations. When you have finished some of your practice cakes, take a picture. Assemble a small idea book with some of your previous creations so you can show people some of the work you have done in the past. This is a great idea for showing a bride and groom so that they can choose their dream wedding cake.

  5. Step 5

    Work with brides and grooms, and create beautiful cakes for wedding receptions. Show them your idea book and start planning. You will want to know the basic requests as in how many people will they need to feed with the cake, what flavor, and what colors they may want you to incorporate into the cake. You want to be proud of the cake, and you want your cake to impress the crowd.
