      Brush your teeth at least twice a day. Not only does brushing your teeth make your teeth look and feel cleaner, but it contributes to better-smelling breath. Try to brush your teeth once in the morning and once in the evening. Use gentle strokes and brush in tiny circles. Brush for at least 2-1/2 to 3 minutes each time you brush. Brush your teeth with toothpaste containing fluoride and brush immediately after eating anything that might stain your teeth (foods and beverages usually dark in color such as wine, coffee or chocolate). Don’t be afraid to carry a toothbrush with you when you go out or at work.

      Floss daily. You should floss your teeth once a day. Dental floss reaches areas that your toothbrush may not reach. When you floss, you remove food stuck between teeth--including tiny food particles we can't even see. Not only does it help you to keep a healthy smile, but it also prevents bad breath.

      Maintain healthy eating habits. Eat a well-balanced diet that's high in fruits, vegetables and cheese. Avoid colas, diet drinks, excessive fruit drinks, chocolate and candy, and large quantities of dried fruit. These foods typically contain a lot of sugar, which contributes to plaque buildup. Avoid smoking, which can stain teeth as well as cause gum disease and oral cancer.

      Drink lots of water. Be sure to drink at least 8, 8-ounce glasses of water a day. Drinking water not only rinses your mouth, but combats plaque and bad breath. Water is a healthier alternative to juices, which contain a lot of sugar.
