How to Make the Cheer Squad

Cheerleaders are the glue that holds most sporting events together. As the crowd becomes restless or frustrated during the game, the cheer squad inspires everyone to stand up and cheer the team on to victory. Becoming a cheerleader is an honor that comes with popularity, confidence and lasting friendships, but it requires hard work and determination to secure your place on the cheer squad.

Instructions

    • 1

Get your doctor’s permission and a complete physical before training to become a cheerleader. Most schools require that all members of athletic teams be able to pass a physical exam before participating in sporting events. Your doctor can determine if cheerleading is right for you based on your medical history and your current, overall health. He may also be able to suggest things you can do to prevent injury during strenuous training exercises.

    • 2

Master the required gymnastic stunts. Beauty and pep will get you nowhere in the world of cheerleading if you can’t perform a simple cartwheel or round-off. While you’re not required to be a master of modern dance to make the cheer squad, you will need the ability to learn simple dance moves and tumbling stunts. If you’re concerned about the types of routines you’ll need to perform, go to the next school game and watch the cheerleaders. You can pick up some ideas and prepare yourself for training. Practice cartwheels, handsprings, jumps and routines to perfect your style; enlist the help of your friends to assist you with stunts that require a team effort.

Show your school spirit and pep during auditions. You can’t allow problems at home, school or work to get in the way of your cheerleading success. Even if you’re not feeling well, you must still muster a smile and school spirit that matches that of the other members of the cheer squad. If you stiffen up, act sluggish or fail to smile during auditions, your chances for making the squad are almost nonexistent. Make a good impression on the cheerleading coach and the members of the cheer squad by smiling and putting a lot of energy into your routines.

    • 4

Ask members of the cheer squad for pointers. The girls on the cheer squad know exactly what it takes to make the team and you can use their advice to improve your chances of becoming a cheerleader. Ask them to help you improve your technique and get tips on what it takes to impress the cheerleading coaches. A good cheerleader will be happy to share her knowledge with you.

Don’t worry if you don’t make the cheer squad the first time. There’s always next year, and you can use the experience you gained to wow the coaches and squad members the next time you try out for the team.

Tips & Warnings

  • Cheerleading requires a lot of energy. Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet to give your body the energy it needs for an audition.

  • The hardest part of being a cheerleader is making the cheer squad. After you’ve passed this hurdle, just keep up your enthusiasm and perseverance and you’ll retain your spot on the squad next year.
