How to Draw Treasure Chests

Drawing a treasure chest is a simple activity. It only requires a pen and pencil. Even by drawing a simple object like a treasure chest, you can let your imagination soar, especially when you start to decorate the chest with designs and ornaments from the Golden Age of Sea Exploration. Yes, that is when real pirates cruised the Seven Seas in search of loot. Get ready, set and draw your way to adventure.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw the bottom half of the treasure chest. This is nothing more than a rectangular shaped box. Make the rectangle into a three-dimensional object by having one of the front corners appear closer to the viewer. From this vertical line, you can extend two lines that travel away from the vertical line and form the front and one side of the treasure chest.

Use the window frame to outline a reflective surface. Windows and windows in doors work quite effectively in this manner. The glass acts as a reflective surface picking up the image of clouds in the sky or a busy street, and the frame of the window (or door) becomes an interior frame within the picture. This is an exciting creative technique that produces many innovative images.

Add a padlock. The lock should be placed in the middle of the front side right below the point where the top and the bottom of the chest meet. Make sure you draw a lock that looks like an antique. Don’t forget to draw a dark space in the center of the lock that allows room for the entrance of the key.

Add metal bands and metal corners. These little bits and pieces will make your object of art come alive in the eyes of other viewers. Be sure to include metal corners on the bottom (the fancier the better). Also, there should be strips of metal on top of the chest and along the line where the chest opens. These don’t have to be simple flat bands of metal, but they can be elaborate strips of metal with encrusted jewels embedded in them.

    • 5

Redraw the treasure chest for more practice. Follow steps 1 to 4, but you can make adjustments this time. You can have a lid popped open. Make a pile of gold coins visible on the inside.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make several drawings of the outline of the chest until you get one that you like. Then continue from there.

  • Drawing can be addictive.
