Things You'll Need:
- Reusable Lunch Bag or Box
- Reusable food containers or bags
- Food
-
Step 1
Purchase a canvas or quilted lunch sack for the frugal school lunch. You can even make one out of an old paid of jeans or a jacket if you have skills in sewing.
-
Step 2
Use reusable bags or plastic tubs for the parts of the meal. These can be purchased or recycled from food products such as yogurt and butter. Decorate the outsides of the tubs so your child is not embarassed by eating out of a butter tub.
-
Step 3
Instruct your child to drink water from the water fountain instead of purchasing expensive juice boxes or unhealthy cans of soda. If you wish to send a drink in the frugal school lunch, purchase a thermos or reusable bottle.
-
Step 4
Ignore pre-packaged Lunchables-style kid's lunch foods. These are not only ridiculously expensive for the amount of food given, they are unhealthy and the packaging is bad for the environment.
-
Step 5
Choose a piece of fresh fruit, or a small tub or bag full of cut up vegetables. Frugal eating is often healthy eating. A sandwich is pretty standard school lunch fair, but you can also pack leftovers from dinner the night before. Add homemade cookies in the frugal school lunch.

on 9/5/2009 I agree with Alisiane. In this economy you learn quickly what you can do without. These are excellent tips for frugal lunches. We saved the $10 on the charachter lunch bag (that falls part anyway) and just use Gladware. Works great.

on 10/23/2008 Frugal eating often tends to be much better for you like you said. In a strange way, this downturn in the economy has been something of a blessing because it is causing us to take a look at ways that we were being just plain wasteful before. Great tips!
