How to Carve Ivy in Wood

Throughout the centuries people have used woodcarving to not only tell stories, but also to create artwork for outside and household decoration. The designs used in woodcarving are countless; however, if you're looking for something with timeless appeal, try carving ivy in wood.

Instructions

    • 1

Start with a sharp woodcarving knife. Some people have a fear of using sharp knifes and try to use duller knifes not suitable for woodcarving. However, if you use a dull knife you have to push harder to carve the wood, which increases your chances of cutting yourself. The Swedish sloyd knife is not only good for beginners, but stays sharp for a long time.

    • 2

Buy only one woodcarving knife to begin. Buying multiple knives not only is expensive, but also it's one of the reasons people end up with injuries and get discouraged before they even begin.

    • 3

Wear protection. Buy a decent chain mesh carving glove to protect the hand that you aren't using to carve the wood. It's also a good idea to invest in a pair of quality leather boots. If you drop a tool, which happens from time to time, you won't end up with a bloody foot.

    • 4

Become a member of a local carving club. These clubs often meet weekly or monthly and if they charge it's usually minimal. This is a great way to find mentors who you can observe and from whom you can learn. They can also help to guide you in carving more intricate designs on wood, such as ivy.

    • 5

Draw your ivy design. If you're not artistically inclined, you can either purchase patterns for woodcarving on the Internet or at woodcarving stores. Another option is to take a picture of some ivy and place carbon paper over the picture to trace the pattern.

    • 6

Trace your ivy pattern onto the wood by using either carbon or graphite paper. (Graphite is better for being able to erase mistakes without making smudges on your wood.) Place the carbon or graphite paper on the wood and the picture of the ivy on top of the graphite or carbon paper. Secure them with tape and begin tracing the picture onto your wood.

    • 7

Use a band saw to carve out the outline of your ivy. Then use your carving knife to finish the design.
