Maintaining your nails is an important step to keeping your nails healthy. By shaping them gently with a nail file after clipping them, you prevent your nails from breaking or snagging your clothes. Check your nails on a weekly basis to keep them in good shape. Whether you nails are long or short, take the time to file them carefully to avoid roughing up your nails, causing them to break more easily.
Trim your nails straight across with a nail clipper. Do not shape them with the clipper, simply trim in a straight line.

File your nails with a nail file or emery board, working at an angle. Use the file to shape your nails, rounding the edges slightly to create softened box shape. Work from the rightmost edge to the center. File in one direction to avoid creating splits in your nails and work slowly.

File your nail from the left edge to the center. Work from the leftmost edge to the center. File in one direction to avoid creating splits in your nails and work slowly.

Buff your nails gently if you have white ridges on the tops of your nails. Buff in one direction to avoid weakening your nails.
