Make Laced Leather Koozies Without Sewing

While a little more work than the simple leather koozie pattern, they have a style all their own. Anyone who loves leather and lace is going to want one of these koozies. The pattern offers two different styles: twine lace up or brads and leather lace up. You can also use recycled leather to make the koozies from. What a great way to use up an old skirt or jacket that you’ve outgrown! These koozies are also machine washable.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 12”x9” leather
  • scissors
  • hole punch
  • 8 brads (optional)
  • 40 inches of leather lace or 55 inches of ribbon or twine
  • printer
  • Liquid Stitch
  1. Step 1

Cut leather into manageable pieces. Make sure pieces are larger than what you will need as the leather will shrink when dried. Add detergent to water prior to adding leather. Wash in hot water. Dry in dryer. This will pre-shrink the leather and allow you to wash your koozies in the washer after they are made. However, never put through the dryer again.

  2. Step 2

Print out pattern at http://www.makethemyourself.com/tkoozie.html. Click on the photo of the pattern and a PDF file will be opened that you can print out. The pattern has a 1-inch square box to allow you to confirm sizing prior to cutting out the pattern. It may be necessary to enlarge the pattern after printing it out. Cut out pattern and punch holes as indicated. For the leather lace koozie only punch out every-other hole, for the twine/lace every hole as indicated.

  3. Step 3

Lay your pattern over the wrong side of the leather and trace. Be sure to indicate whole locations on your leather. I find a permanent marker works best.

  4. Step 4

Cut out leather piece and punch out brad locations. Add brads if desired.

  5. Step 5

Run a stream of Liquid Stitch glue about ¼ of an inch from inside edge of holes (on wrongs side of leather) and smear away from brads. Liquid Stitch is a fabric glue that can be found at most fabric/sewing stores. It works best for washable leather items than anything else I’ve tried.

  6. Step 6

Fold wider leather pieces up and over more narrow piece until edges align with start of bottom piece.

  7. Step 7

Run lace through holes. It dries better and maintains a better shape if you place your koozie on a can before tightening up the laces and tying.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can purchase eyelets in tons of fun colors at craft stores, and some department stores, in the scrapbooking section.
  • Be sure to consider using recycled leather. Check your local thrift stores for leather mini skirts, pants, and jackets in fun colors.
  • Have a local leather store? Check and see if they have a “scrap” bin; will save you a ton!
