1
Border your garden with a fence, stone wall or hedge. Highlight a traditional country garden with a white picket fence with an arched gate and black wrought iron hardware. Surround an English cottage garden with a rustic stone wall or a free-form border of rose bushes or lilacs. Plant a boxwood hedge around a formal garden. Keep it trimmed.

2
Create seating areas. Choose weathered Adirondack chairs arranged around a vintage bench on a brick terrace tucked under a flowering fruit tree for a country style garden. Place a Mason jar full of freshly picked flowers on the bench. Give old wicker chairs a shabby chic flair with a coat of light pink paint and cushions covered in fabric with a faded floral design. Situate them next to a small fish pond. Prop a fishing pole next to a tackle box near a tree. Spread a blanket on the ground in a rose garden, add large cushions and a wicker basket full of goodies.

Add structures. Place an arbor crafted from grapevines on the meandering path of a cottage garden. Train climbing roses to grow up the sides and over the top for a romantic feel. Shelter a deck or terrace with a pergola covered in English ivy for protection from the elements. Twine twinkle lights around the support pillars for a night time glow. Situate a gazebo in the center of the garden so you can enjoy the scents and sights. Hang sheer white curtains inside to be pulled for privacy and left to billow in the breeze when privacy is not necessary.

Accessorize. Highlight a pathway with stepping stones embellished with stained glass. Hang paper lanterns from tree limbs to give an evening get together a punch of both color and light. Label your herbs with smooth rocks bearing their names. Make a scarecrow out of old clothes stuffed with straw. Put a stuffed crow on his shoulder and have him stand guard over your garden. Create a rustic work of art by nailing weathered garden implements to a shed. Balance them with a grouping of barn stars in different colors and sizes. Add a gazing globe or stone bird bath to a formal garden. Remove the seat from an old wooden chair and plant flowers in the space for a shabby chic accent.
