A soothing warm tea with extras to soothe the voice

This warm tea-based drink recipe was given to me by a famous singer who happened into a club I was performing in years ago. Our lead singer had a lot of congestion that night, and the professional singer generously gave us his recipe for keeping the voice clear and soothed while singing (or speaking).

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tea cup or mug, tea bag or tea with steeper (herbal work best), hot water or teapot in which to boil water, a teaspoon, a Tablespoon measure, apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, honey.
  1. Step 1

In a teapot or saucepan, heat (just before boiling) enough water to fill one tea or coffee mug.

  2. Step 2

Choose a tea bag (herbal is best) or place loose leaf tea in a steeper, and put in the mug.

  3. Step 3

Pour hot water over the tea bag or steeper, until the mug is almost full (leave about an inch of space at the top). Let steep until the tea is the strength you prefer.

  4. Step 4

Remove tea bag or steeper from mug.

  5. Step 5

Add 1 Tablespoon each of Apple Cider Vinegar, Lemon Juice, and Honey to the brewed tea. Stir until blended.

  6. Step 6

Drink up! You'll find your throat and voice feeling soothed right away.

Tips & Warnings
  • The acidity in the vinegar and lemon juice counteract phlegm and irritation in the throat, while the honey coats and soothes the throat. This works well for congestion or irritation caused by overuse of the voice, exposure to smoke-filled environments, or allergies.
  • Many singers and voiceover artists report that avoiding dairy and other foods to which they are sensitive also helps prevent congestion and keeps the voice clear and healthy.
  • Don't drink too many cups of this remedy at once! Consult a trusted health care provider if experiencing prolonged congestion or irritation.

on 8/1/2008 Don't laugh. My grandma used to give us these but replaced the vinegar with whiskey before bed (when we had a cold). Made us sleep so sound! -tj
