Summer is a great time to adventure to new surroundings. Children enjoy the change of scenery and opportunities to explore and discover new things. However there may be a few things to keep in mind when planning travel for the whole family. This "How to" seeks to help families easily prepare for the perfect trip. After you read the article, please feel free to post any additional comments or questions about making your family travel enjoyable and stress free.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Food: individually wrap servings of fresh fruit and veggies, snacks, and even mini sandwiches, 4oz of beverages
  • Portable games: electronic devices with fresh batteries and chargers, board games, playing cards
  • Music
  • Books: Print and Audio
  • Videos
  • Lunch Bags
  • Portable Cooler
  • Blankets
  • Pillows
  • Zipper Plastic Storage bags, of various sizes
  • Outdoor Play toys, such as Frisbees, balls, or jump rope.
  1. Step 1

Plan out your trip in advance. If traveling by car, include stops along the way.

  2. Step 2

Create a family survival kit to include:

Food: individually wrap servings of fresh fruit and veggies, snacks, and even mini sandwiches, 4oz of beverages

Portable games: electronic devices with fresh batteries and chargers, board games, playing cards

    Books: print and audio

    Music

    Videos

  3. Step 3

Use a lunch bag or small portable cooler that is easily accessible with a few items for immediate. Have an additional bag(s) to hold the extra items that may be stored in the trunk or near the back hatch. If individual family members have distinct eating needs, then bags should be packed and labeled for each person.

  4. Step 4

Prepare sleeping items with travel sized pillows and blankets. Storing them in an extra large zip lock bag will allow them to be stored and kept clean when not in use but accessible when needed.

  5. Step 5

Arrange for mini stops or stretch breaks every 2-3 hours. Children will be cranky and irritable without unrestricted opportunities to move. Include a ball, jump rope, Frisbee, or other items for outdoor play during the gas or restroom stops.

Tips & Warnings
  • To reduce travel stress, plan shorter trips if time is limited. Remember that children are easily entertained. They do not need much to be happy, so remember less is more.
  • Do not feel pressured to see and do everything during this trip.
  • Don't forget to relax and enjoy your vacation.

on 7/27/2008 Pack lots of water too - it may increase the number of 'pit stops' but staying hydrated is a plus. Good ideas - thank you. *****
