A simple, homemade worm bin

A worm bin is a family-friendly project that can also reduce, or even eliminate, the amount of food waste you put in the garbage. It can also generate compost for your garden. Here are some straightforward steps for making a simple worm bin.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • one plastic container with lid (21 inches long, 15 inches deep, and 12 inches high is a good size to try)
  • 2 bricks or wood blocks
  • one slightly larger container (optional)
  • sharp tool like a screwdriver or knife
  1. Step 1

Put some small holes in the bottom of the bin using a screwdriver or other sharp implement. The holes should be large enough to let out water, but not a worm.

  2. Step 2

Place the bin on top of the blocks. If your worm bin will be outside, then set it up out there. If you plan to keep your worm bin inside, then place the covered bin on blocks inside another slightly larger container; we use one that is about 5 inches high. This second container is to catch any water that comes out the bottom.

  3. Step 3

Add some newspaper. It can be shredded or cut into one-inch strips. The worms eat newspaper, and this helps to keep your worm bin dry.

  4. Step 4

Add red worms to your bin. If you have a friend with a worm bin, simply ask that person for a bunch of worms. If you need to purchase worms, a good first place to check is your local extension office. There are also online places where you can order red worms.

  5. Step 5

Now you can begin adding food scraps to your bin. Worms cannot tolerate citrus, and meat and cheese are not recommended as they smell and increase the chance you will attract bugs.
