How to take charge of your personal stress

Stress is an every day occurrence in most of our lives. Some stress can be good like buying a home or having a baby, but there are also bad stressor's like loosing a job or family member or dealing with those who would like to hurt you in some way. Stress can cause health problems if left untreated, for example, Acne, Alcoholism, Cancer, Crohn's Disease, Diabetes, Eating disorders, Headaches, Heart Disease, Hives and Insomnia, to name a few. So, how do we stop stress? The answer is we don't, but by following these 15 steps we can manage stress and help prevent some of these health problems.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Invest 30 minutes in vigorous physical exercise, 3 to 5 times weekly. Work up a sweat if possible.*

  2. Step 2

    Learn some relaxation techniques.*

  3. Step 3

    Cut back on caffeine and, if applicable, nicotine.

  4. Step 4

    Eat regular meals. More protein less carbs!

  5. Step 5

    Meditate, get centered.

  6. Step 6

    Try to develop better time management habits and routines. *

  7. Step 7

    Play, have some fun, recharge your batteries.

  8. Step 8

    Get plenty of sleep on a regular basis. *

  9. Step 9

    Use humor to help lighten your emotional load, learn to laugh at yourself!

  10. Step 10

    Count your blessings daily and be greateful for them.

  11. Step 11

    Say nice things when you talk to yourself. Practice "self- speak" to calm down. Examples: I am strong, I am smart, or I am worthy.

  12. Step 12

    Simplify wherever possible.

  13. Step 13

    Develop a sense of purpose, set some goals for yourself.

  14. Step 14

    Forgive and forget! Grudges and resentments just add to the load.

  15. Step 15

    Finally, practice optimism- Hope is a muscle you can develop!

Tips & Warnings
  • Check your local library for books on relaxation, self talk and time management. Try Yoga or get a massage to relax.
  • Try over the counter sleep aids if you have trouble sleeping.
  • Ask your doctor before beginning any exercise routine.
