Angelica is a genus of tall herbs in the Apiaceae family. It consists of about 50 species that are native to the subarctic region, growing as far north as Iceland. It's primary commercial use is in flavoring and herbal medicine. Here's how to take Angelica root to improve your health.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Read up on the historical uses of Angelica root. It has been used in China for thousands of years, primarily for menstrual problems. Angelica is highly regarded in traditional medicine and is known as the "female ginseng."

  2. Step 2

Look at the use of Angelica root in modern homeopathy. It is commonly used to treat high blood pressure, circulatory problems and cardiovascular disease. Herbalists consider Angelica root to be a remedy for colds, coughs and fevers. It also has use as a warming agent.

  3. Step 3

Look at the scientific studies that have been conducted with Angelica root. Good quality human studies are limited and its efficacy as a medicine remains inconclusive at this time.

  4. Step 4

Study the side effects of angelica root. Its use while pregnant or nursing is not recommended because of possible anticoagulant and hormonal properties. Some people are allergic or hypersensitive to various species of angelica and may experience skin rashes in increased sensitivity to sunlight.

  5. Step 5

Use caution when taking angelica root with other drugs. It can increase the risk of bleeding when taken with anticoagulants such as aspirin, heparin or warfarin. You should also inform your physician when taking angelica with anti-platelet drugs such as clopidogrel or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen and naproxen.
