How to Fix a Hole in a Tent

You reach your outdoor destination, remove your tent from your backpack and prepare to set it up only to find a hole. You certainly don't want to sleep in a tent with a hole, as that's just an open invitation for bugs to visit you. Luckily fixing that single hole is simple, as long as you have the right tools with you at the campground.

Things You'll Need

  • Tent
  • Scissors
  • Canvas or cloth repair tape
  • Duct tape (optional)
  • Needle and thread
  • Waterproofing spray

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the hole in your tent. Determine how long it is, as you need to cut the patch as long and wide as the hole is to fix it.

    • 2

Cut a piece of tent canvas or cloth repair tape as big as the hole plus 1 or 2 inches. The extra inches allow you room to attach the canvas to the tent.

    • 3

Stitch the patch onto the tent. Make the stitches short and close together to reinforce the seams.

    • 4

Use duct tape if you don't have a needle and thread handy. Seal all four sides. Make sure the overlap is on the outside of the tent. For added coverage, you can apply another patch to the inside of the tent.

    • 5

Seal the tent with waterproofing spray. This can help if it happens to rain while you're inside the tent.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you realize you have a hole in your tent while you're still at home, you can fix the hole by ironing on the patch instead of sewing it.

  • Consider the age of the tent before making repairs. If the tent has seen its fair share of camping, don't waste your time trying to fix it. A better suggestion might be to go out and buy a new one.
