How to Dispute a Plumber's Bill

Whether your pipes have sprung a leak or you're adding some water lines, a plumber is a good person to have on your speed dial. As with most repair services, there may come a time when it's necessary to dispute the plumber's bill if you're not in agreement or satisfied with the services you received. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Review your plumber's contract, if there is one. If your contact with the plumber was for routine work and not an emergency, you'll have a written estimate concerning the work that needs to be done and the costs. Even in an emergency, the plumber should receive your permission before proceeding with any repairs.

    • 2

Determine if your homeowner's insurance covers any repairs. Check with your insurance agent or read your policy to see if your plumber can bill your insurance directly.

    • 3

Contact the manager or main customer service line of your plumber. Inform the company that there's a dispute concerning the bill. If your plumber is self-employed, contact him directly to inform him verbally of the dispute.

    • 4

Place your dispute in writing. Make note of any contact between yourself and your plumber, as well as whether you gave permission for any repairs. Compare the final bill with the written estimate, if any.

    • 5

Go over your plumber's bill dispute in person. Request a meeting with the person in charge, as well as the plumber, to go over your written dispute, details of the services performed and charges relating from those services.

    • 6

Consult local plumbers concerning their rates and billing procedures. Although different companies have different costs, fees and charges should be comparable. Present this information to your plumber in disputing his bill.

    • 7

Consider legal involvement if attempts at resolving your plumber's bill dispute fail.
