How to Build a Jungle Gym

Small, metal swing sets are a thing of the past. Today's swing sets are bigger and better. The new phenomenon is to build wooden playgrounds that are the envy of the neighborhood. There are a variety of plans to choose from, but you want to know the basics when it comes to building your own jungle gym.

1. Set a budget. Jungle gyms can range anywhere between $400 to over $10,000 depending on the type of wood, design and accessories you choose.

2. Choose a jungle gym plan. Some companies offer the "jungle gym in a box," which includes everything you need, such as pre-cut wood, accessories and the building plan. Other places offer design kits, which show you a model of the jungle gym and how to build it. You buy the design kit separate from the wood, which needs to be cut to the proper size.

3. Decide on which accessories you want. Whether you're designing your own plan or buying a "jungle gym in a box," the extras are what make it great and unique. They offer everything from spiral slides, rock climbing walls to trapeze balls.

4. Pick which type of wood you want to use. Three of the most common types of wood used for jungle gyms are pine, redwood and cedar. Pressure-treated, Southern yellow pine is one of the most cost-effective, resilient and decay-resistant woods available.

5. Find an area that is level and provides enough room for the structure. If the ground is uneven, you may need to level this before building the jungle gym. It's recommended to provide 6 feet on all dimensions of the jungle gym for a safe play area.

6. Get a friend or someone to assist you in building the jungle gym. If the unit is very small it may not be necessary to get assistance. However, on some of the larger units a second person is definitely needed to hold up some of the larger equipment.
