How to Accommodate Two Religions in a Wedding

Couples of different religions have several choices when it comes to planning a wedding. Before deciding which way you want to go, it is a good idea to talk to your church leaders to find out what guidelines your wedding much adhere to, for it to be recognized by both of your churches.

1. Hold two separate wedding ceremonies and one combined reception. If being recognized by your church is important to you, and the guidelines placed by the two churches do not allow much room for compromise, then you may need to hold two separate ceremonies. To allow the two families time to meet and mix, it is a good idea to only hold one reception for all to attend. In most cases this means having your reception on a different day than the wedding ceremonies.
2. Blend the two religions in the wedding ceremony if the guidelines give to you by the churches allow for this. Hold the wedding in a neutral place, such as a park or a private home and ask the leaders of both churches to officiate the ceremony.
3. Have a non-denominational wedding. Hold the wedding in a neutral setting and have the ceremony conducted by a wedding officiant. A wedding officiant performs non-denominational wedding services. Another option for a non-denominational wedding is to have a civil service wedding.
4. Allow one religion to dominate the wedding ceremony and the other religion to control the reception. For example, hold a Catholic wedding in a church, followed by a Jewish wedding reception in a rented hall.
