How to Access Files From a PC Remotely

Accessing files from a PC from a remotely is something most businesses couldn't do without. It allows computer users to use and share information on their home or office PC from a different location.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Employ a web-based access company, such as GoToMyPC.com, and see what plans they have available for businesses and personal accounts. These websites typically charge a fee per month or per use. These services are very useful for larger companies and businesses.

  2. Step 2

    Install remote access desktop software, such as Anyplace Control, Remote Desktop or any other remote access software. Many of these remote access software programs run on both Apple and Windows-based operating systems.

  3. Step 3

    Turn on the remote access features on the computer using the Windows operating system feature. Navigate to the system Control Panel and then to the Remote tab. Enable this feature for others to access data files on that computer.

  4. Step 4

    Ensure the computer that contains the data or files is able to share this information. To access the information from a remote location, turn on sharing for the file, drive or location containing the data.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep the computer on at all times to be able to access from remote locations. Some settings on a Windows-based computer allow remote wake up of a sleeping or hibernating system.
  • Secure the remote access procedure by employing passwords to access data files.
  • Never disclose sensitive information or data while accessing a computer remotely.
