How to Buff a Marble Floor

Marble floors are beautiful additions to any home or workspace. These surfaces reflect a good portion of light and different types of marble give off different light patterns and levels of intensity. Buffing a marble floor yourself greatly reduces the cost of having a professional come in to do the job. Does this Spark an idea?

      Measure the area of the marble floor to get a good idea of what type of machine to rent and how much cleaning solution to buy.

      Rent a floor buffer or polisher form a rental company. Describe the marble flooring to the staff of the rental store so they can provide the proper buffing material pads and cleaning solutions for the project. Allow the staff to give lessons on floor maintenance before starting the job.

      Sweep away any dust, dirt or debris from the marble floor and remove any furniture from the area to provide a clean palette to from which to work. Pay particular attention to under cabinet trim and along baseboards for trapped debris.

      Wipe the entire marble floor down with a very damp mop to better remove any grease or sticky substances. This will help eliminate any scratching or dulling of the marble floor while buffing.

      Buff the marble floor with the buffing machine using the precise method, technique and cleaning solutions provided by the rental supply company.

      Mop the entire surface of the marble floor after buffing to remove any haze or spots left over from the buffing.

Tips & Warnings

  • Avoid the rental supply company altogether for small jobs and simply mop the marble floor with a very damp mop and a very mild cleaning solution specifically for marble flooring.

  • Have a friend help move furniture and assist with the buffing machine.

  • Always use products specifically designed and labeled for marble floors to avoid damage to the surface.
