Step 1
Inspect children's toys on a regular basis. Look for pieces that are broken and small parts that could become a choking hazard. If the toy or part fits through the mouth of your standard tube for toilet paper, it is too small. Throw away any small parts.
-
Step 2
Keep small items out of reach and off of the floor. Not everything that is small is practical to throw away. Nuts, coins, hard candy, elastic bands and balloons must be kept safely out of the hands (and mouths) of small children.
-
Step 3
Put babies to bed on their backs on a firm mattress. Toys, comforters and pillows should not be placed in the cribs with them as they can cause suffocation.
-
Step 4
Cut window blind cords. Children can get their heads stuck inside the loops of window blind cords. Cut the cords so there are no loops and place the cords up high so children can't reach them. When you are ready to replace the blinds, buy blinds that are cordless.
-
Step 5
Follow window guidelines by installing L-shaped metal window guards inside the window tracks, which make the window only able to open high enough that a child can't fit through and fall out of the window. Keep all furniture away from the windows to avoid falls.

Step 6
Observe recall notices. The Consumer Product Safety Commission provides updates of recalled toys at their website (see Resources below).
