Things You'll Need:

    Preparation for Training

  1. Step 1

Find a fall marathon you'd like to train for locally, or locate a fall marathon through websites like MarathonGuide.com, which lists marathon events worldwide.

  2. Step 2

Determine your marathon goals. You may just want to finish the marathon, or you may want to meet or beat a time.

  3. Step 3

Find a training plan suited for your level of fitness. You can find sources online including websites operated by marathon runners and trainers Jeff Galloway and Hal Higdon. They list beginner, intermediate and advanced marathon training programs. Consider hiring a running coach for personalized training.

  4. Training During the Summer

  5. Step 1

Drink enough fluids so you can stay hydrated while you're training during the hot summer months. Drink fluids 30 to 45 minutes before your training. Drink about a cup every 10 or 15 minutes during your run. Sports drinks have electrolytes and carbohydrates, which replace glycogen during exercising.

  6. Step 2

Wear lightweight moisture wicking running clothes. Coolmax is a lightweight wicking material popular with runners.

  7. Step 3

Buy and wear UV protectant sunglasses, even when you're running on a hazy or overcast day.

  8. Step 4

Consider running in the early morning, before it gets hot. The temperatures during the morning will be cooler before the sun comes up.

  9. Step 5

Hit the gym when you need to. If it's too hot outside, you can train inside the air conditioning on a treadmill.
