Sawdust is the common term for the shavings left after wood is cut. Sawdust from different types of trees can be recycled as kindling in smokers. Recycling the leftover debris reduces the amount of trash we produce and gives food a rich, smoky flavor.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Consider the type of sawdust you want to recycle. Pecan, hickory and mesquite are all great woods to use in a smoker. Do not use cedar or pine in smokers. The sent of the wood creates the smoky taste, so if it is not a smell you want to taste, do not use it.

  2. Step 2

Sweep the sawdust into a pile. Scoop the sawdust in a trash bag with a shovel to help transfer it and to store it for later use.

  3. Step 3

Open the smoker door and add some sawdust to the smoker. Add enough to get the wood burning. The amount of sawdust you add depends on the size of the smoker.

  4. Step 4

Light the sawdust with a match, burning newspaper or lighter. Depending on the dryness of the sawdust, it may catch automatically or it may take a few tries. Continue to add sawdust to the smoker as needed while the food is smoking.

  5. Step 5

Tie the bag of sawdust after use and store in a dry place. This keeps moisture and small animals out of the sawdust.
