The long hours of the night may be the worst time for a cold, as congestion and your cough combine to produce restlessness and exhaustion. You can make your own aromatherapy oil remedy to deal with these symptoms.

From Quick Guide: Aromatherapy
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 6-oz. dark glass bottle
  • Small pot of water
  • 3 1/2 tbsp. sweet almond oil
  • 1 1/2 tbsp. jojoba oil
  • 1 tsp. vitamin E oil
  • 15 drops lavender oil
  • 10 drops clary sage oil
  • 5 drops tea tree oil
  1. Step 1

Mix and store your aromatherapy oil in a 6-oz. dark glass bottle. Remove the cap from the bottle and submerge both in a small pot of water. Heat the water to a rolling boil and leave the bottle and cap in for at least 1 minute. Turn off the heat and allow the water to cool before removing the bottle and cap and leaving them upside down to drain and dry.

  2. Step 2

Mix the oils in your bottle. Combine 3 1/2 tbsp. of sweet almond oil, 1 1/2 tbsp. of jojoba oil and 1 tsp. of vitamin E oil. Add to the mix 15 drops of lavender essential oil, 10 drops of clary sage essential oil and 5 drops of tea tree oil.

  3. Step 3

Cap the bottle and shake gently. You can use the oil immediately, but shake the bottle 2 or 3 times a day for the first 3 days. Store the oil in a cool, dark location and shake gently before using.

Tips & Warnings
  • Rub your aromatherapy oil on your chest, heat it in a diffuser before sleeping or drizzle it into a warm bath to help ease the symptoms of nighttime colds.
  • Use only fresh carrier oils and essential oils to make your nighttime cold remedy. Your oil should last at least 18 months.
