How to Sprout Spelt

Spelt is a semi-sweet grain that can substitute for wheat. Spelt sprouts are high in vitamins E, C and B, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, calcium, amino acids and protein. Select hulled spelt for sprouting. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Organic hulled spelt
  • Fine mesh colander
  • Wide-mouthed glass jar
  • Light cloth to cover jar

Instructions

      Place your sprouts into a fine mesh colander and rinse them under running water. Pour the spelt into a wide-mouthed glass jar, and then cover the grains with water. Let them soak for 6 to 10 hours.

      Drain the water from the spelt and place it into the jar. Cover the jar with a light cloth and leave it in a cool location away from direct sunlight. Return to your sprouts after 8 to 12 hours and rinse them thoroughly.

      Place your spelt in the colander in a cool, semi-lit location. Stir the spelt every hour or so, to help the grains dry. After they dry, place the sprouts in a sealed jar in the refrigerator for 1 or 2 weeks.

Tips & Warnings

  • Sprout only as much spelt as you cane at in about 1 to 2 weeks.

  • 2/3 cup of spelt should yield between 3/4 and 1 1/4 cups of sprouts.
