How to Inspect Contact Points in a Car

The contact points located in the distributor and ignition systems must be kept clean and in working order for the rest of the components to do their jobs and keep your engine running. Learn what to look for when you inspect the contact points in your car.

Instructions

    • 1

Gain access to the ignition system. This will be different for different vehicles. Once you are in the ignition system, locate the ignition coil. This should be accessible under the hood.

    • 2

Disconnect the ignition coil by disconnecting the primary wiring electrical connector and removing the high tension lead from the coil. Locate and remove the mounting bolts and detach them from the coil bracket. To reinstall later, follow the same instructions only in reverse.

    • 3

Clean the outer case of the ignition coil. If you find any damage, cracked spots and excessive corrosion, replace the outer case. Check and clean the primary terminal contact points. Grimy contact points will obstruct a solid connection in the ignition coil, which will prevent your vehicle from starting.

    • 4

Apply engine cleaner to the contact points with a soft rag. If it doesn't remove all the grime, let the engine cleaner sit for a minute, then try wiping it off. Don't use anything corrosive or abrasive on the contacts, as it can cause pitting which will disrupt the flow of energy through the ignition system.
