Eye masks often are used during meditation or the relaxation portion of a yoga session. These masks block out the light, and the slight pressure they place on the facial area around the eyes induces deep relaxation. The addition of healing plants when making herbal eye masks can enhance their soothing benefits.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Choose a sturdy yet breathable fabric for your eye mask. Try velvet, satin, soft cotton or even soft wool. Cut two 5" by 9" rectangles from the fabric.

  2. Step 2

Fold the fabric down 1/4 inch on the short side of each piece and press flat. Fold the fabric down so that the wrong side meets the wrong side.

  3. Step 3

Place the right sides of the fabric together with the hemmed edges together. Stitch around the three unhemmed sides so that you have a long, skinny bag. Cut off the two bottom stitched corners at a 90-degree angle, and then turn the bag right side out. Press the bag flat if necessary.

  4. Step 4

Cut a strip of 1/4-inch self-adhesive Velcro to fit the opening of the bag. If you cannot find 1/4-inch Velcro, cut a strip to size. Remove the adhesive backing and stick firmly in place. Open the two pieces of Velcro and stitch along the top, around the opening of the bag, to secure the Velcro in place.

  5. Step 5

Fill the bag loosely with 4 parts flaxseed and 1 part dried herbs. Try lavender, chamomile or passion flower to help you relax, or eucalyptus for sinus relief. Use your mask for power naps and use energy stimulating scents, such as lemongrass or mint. When you no longer smell the scent of your herbal eye mask, replace it's contents.
