Instructions

    • 1

Begin the hat by casting on 65 stitches.

    • 2

Move onto the first row. Knit two and then purl two. Repeat this pattern until the last stitch is reached. Then knit one. Repeat this patterned row until you have about a length of six inches.

    • 3

Shape the crown of the hat next. The pattern of the next row should go as follows: knit two, purl two, knit two together, purl two. Repeat this pattern until you reach the last stitch of the previous row.

    • 4

Continue creating the shape of the crown with the next row. For this row knit two together and then purl one. Repeat this pattern until two stitches are left on the previous row. Then purl one and knit one.

    • 5

Purl one and then knit one in a pattern for the next row. Repeat this for three more rows. Knit two together across the row for the fourth row. Purl for the next row, and with the final row knit two together across the row.

    • 6

Cut the yarn leaving at least 12 inches of yarn at the end. Thread the yarn through the stitches. Sew up the side seam of the hat.

    • 7

Cut 30 pieces of yarn, each 4 inches in length for the pom-pom. Use one piece to tie the others together at the center. Use another piece of yarn to wrap around the bottom half-inch of the folded yarn. Unravel all of the yarn pieces from the tie upward. Sew the pom-pom onto the top of the hat.
