How to Knit a Purl Beret
A beret is a great hat for a casual or sophisticated look. It is also an easy hat to knit. This quick project can be started and completed in one evening. You will need a worsted weight yarn to make tis headgear.

- Circular knitting needles size 7 and 10
- Tapestry needle

Make a gauge swatch. The gauge needed for this project is 7 stitches per 2 inches. You may need to change the size of the needles to get gauge.

Cast on 80 stitches with the smaller yarn. Join in the round. Make sure not to twist the stitches. Begin knitting in knit 1, purl 1 ribbing. Knit in the pattern until the piece is 2 inches long. Change to the large needles.

Begin the increases. Knit 5 stitches and increase. Repeat this for an entire row. There will be 93 stitches on the needle. Knit in stockinette stitch for 3 rows. Knit 6 stitches next and increase. Repeat this for another full row. You'll end up having 106 stitches.

Knit in stockinette stitch until the piece measures 5 inches. Start decreasing. Knit 8 stitches and then knit two stitches together. Repeat this for an entire row. Knit 3 rows. The second decrease row is knit 7 and knit two together.

Repeat the patter of knitting 3 rows and then decreasing again. Knit 6 stitches and knit 2 together, then knit 5 together and knit 2 together, so on and so forth. Continue until there are 16 stitches left.

Cut the yarn leaving a 12-inch tail. Weave the tail through the leftover stitches and pull tight before weaving in the ends.
