How to Become a Kindergarten Teacher
As a kindergarten teacher, you can help your students learn how to behave and succeed in a school environment. This position requires something beyond teaching skills. You must know how to nurture and guide. First, though, you must follow some practical steps before you can teach.

Obtain a bachelor's degree in any major. Kindergarten instructors teach a wide range of subjects, so you don't have to restrict yourself in your college degree. You can further your education by getting your master's degree in education if you want to go on.

Enroll in a college or an online university that specializes kindergarten teacher certification. Read the course listing to see what programs your local schools have to offer you before choosing a school.

Gain teaching experience through all the recommended venues, depending on your college's recommendations. Indiana University has a minimum internship requirement. You must observe or participate in at least 50 hours of kindergarten classes. States such as California and Florida also recommend a minimum of two to three years of teaching experience in school or outside school.

Prepare a teaching portfolio to submit to your academic advisors, including lesson plans and other teaching materials from your field experience. You can follow Indiana University's requirements to create your portfolio.

Register for your state's teaching certification exams. The Florida Department of Education and other DOEs allow applicants to register online or through the mail. Pay the required examination fee upon registration. Once you pass your certification, get your teaching license and find a kindergarten teaching job in your area.
